Normally, DJ Brent Covington hosts “Fur and Gold” on the second Friday of the month, but this week the two-year-old electro-pop/indie-rock night is offering a bonus Friday event as a pre-“Bear Week” celebration. “It runs the gamut: it’s gay, straight, men, and women,” says Covington of the crowd that has been building steadily for the monthly dance party at the Alley Bar. “It’s a small night but in this last year it has hit its stride. The music has more of a broad appeal.” We chatted with Covington about what he thinks will be the five electro-pop songs of the summer. (For more information on “Fur and Gold” go to www.fur gold.com.)
1. “Night & Day,” Hot Chip “It’s not just cold dance music; they’re very soulful and I think that’s what sets them apart. And this song really captures that soulful aspect of them.”
2. “Let’s Have a Kiki,” Scissor Sisters “It’s their big, underground drag anthem. With ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ getting more popular every season, this year it reached a bubbling point, and this song has brought that into the mainstream.”
3. “Liquourice,” Azealia Banks
“I would consider her alternative hip-hop almost overlapping with electro, and this song has a kind of a ’90s, retro, electronic sound, which is weird to say but it’s happening.”
4. “Tonight,” Saint Etienne “This album is an adult perspective on dance and electronic music. Dance music is such a youth culture but there are artists like Saint Etienne that are vintage and it has the perspective of being the age they are but still being part of the culture.”
5. “Timebomb,” Kylie Minogue
“I love this because it’s just a summer dance anthem.”
