Stella Velasco
R&B singer Macy Gray
She made her name as both a singer and songwriter with her hit “I Try,” but on Macy Gray’s latest album, the R&B singer took a shot at interpreting other artists. “Covered,” released in February, features Gray putting her stamp on songs ranging from Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again” to Radiohead’s “Creep” to Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up.”
Ahead of her show with Seal at the South Shore Music Circus this weekend, we recently asked Gray to name five of her favorite covers.
1. “My Way,” Nina Simone. “Frank Sinatra made it famous, but Nina’s version has that crazy percussion.”
2. “We Can Work It Out,” Stevie Wonder. “That’s a great interpretation of the [Beatles] song. It’s totally different the way he flipped it.”
3. “Jolene,” The White Stripes. “I like that they did a Dolly Parton song.”
4. “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston. “Another Dolly Parton song. That’s probably the best cover of all time.”
5. “Here Comes the Sun,” Nina Simone. “Nina Simone doing the Beatles. I realize my cover world is pretty small.”
Bonus question: Whom would Gray want to cover one of her songs? “I’d like to hear John Mayer do my song ‘She Ain’t Right for You,’ ” she says. “I feel like he’d make it folky.”
Macy Gray performs with Seal at the South Shore Music Circus (130 Sohier St., Cohasset) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $69.25-$88.25. 800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com
