Lianne La Havas, ‘Is Your Love Big Enough?’

Talent’s all well and good when it comes to a debut album generating enthusiasm. But even talent can get trumped; a young artist needs ideas. Enter 22-year-old Lianne La Havas, whose “Is Your Love Big Enough?” introduces a performer with some familiar touchstones incorporated in largely unexpected ways. Her voice has three distinct registers: easy like Corinne Bailey Rae at its lightest, pleading like Beyoncé when she hits maximum power, and rich and weighty like Meshell Ndegeocello in between. La Havas constantly mixes what could be a chaotic jumble of split personalities in surprising combinations, from the electrified folk-soul of “Elusive” to the icy-warm, multilayered “Forget,” which recalls St. Vincent. The title track sounds like Ndegeocello throwing a small parade on the deck of a boat, celebratory but unsteady on its feet. The pleasures of “Is Your Love Big Enough?” are unquestionably immediate, but the real excitement is in wondering where her curiosity takes her next. (Out now)
