Megan Hilty and the Boston Pops

For her role as Ivy Lynn on the NBC musical drama “Smash” — which concludes with a two-hour series finale Sunday at 9 p.m. — Megan Hilty had to do a lot of singing along to playbacks in take after take. Friday at Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops she gets to do what she loves, sing live on stage, just as she did as the star of Broadway musicals like “Wicked” and “9 to 5: The Musical.”

“It’s something to give in to, you kind of get lost in it because it’s so beautiful,” she says on the phone from New York City of singing with an orchestra. “It’s a different kind of high getting to sing with that many musicians.”

Although she won’t be performing tunes from her gently lovely recent debut, “It Happens All the Time,” the upside of “Smash” ending will hopefully mean that she’ll able to mount a small tour for what she calls “the little album that could.”

We asked Hilty her five favorite things about singing with an orchestra.

1. The real-time experience. “It’s live and there’s nothing better.”

2. The tunes. “You get to sing incredible songs. It’s going to be songs I’ve done on ‘Smash’ or in Broadway shows and a couple of other Broadway-themed songs. I want to do songs that really utilize the Pops.”

3. The clothes. “I get to wear fantastic dresses, which every girl loves.” (Laughs.)

4. The quality. “They’re the best in the world and I’ve always been a huge fan so I’m extremely excited and a little nervous.”

5. The sights. “I get to travel around and see incredible cities.”

Megan Hilty performs with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22-$92 at 888-266-1200 and www.bso.org.
