BOYFRIENDS ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Friday, 10 p.m., Milky Way, 284 Amory St., Jamaica Plain. 21+. $5 Cover. 617-524-3740, www.milkywayjp.com
The deal: As a nominee for best gay night in the Boston Phoenix Best of 2013 poll, Boyfriends made clear very quickly that it’s here to party. To celebrate its one-year anniversary, Jamaica Plain’s trendy discotheque is throwing a fabulous birthday bash, complete with ’80s-themed club mixes and original throwback visuals projected live by VJ Sean Johnson.
The music: The night’s soundtrack will flashback to the mesh-covered, shoulder-padded greatness of the ’80s, with Resident DJ Brent Covington and guest DJ and Globe style writer Christopher Muther throwing down vintage club jams. “The inspiration for this theme is newer groups like Ladytron that reference that older ’80s synthesizer sound,” says Covington. Expect to hear a blend of dance club favorites by Human League and New Order, along with the new vintage-inspired pop of La Roux and Daft Punk.
The crowd: The flier may say, “For boys who like boys,” but the monthly underground gay dance party has been known to attract a colorful crowd of fabulous people. There’s no better place than a dance floor to bring people together, “Male and female, gay and straight, every night is pretty mixed,” says Covington.
The tip: Work it! “There’s always someone that says, ‘Nobody’s dancing,’ and I tell them, ‘Then start,’” says Covington. “You just need one person moving and everyone will follow.”
