LOST WEEKEND

Anyone who’s heard Anar Badalov’s previous musical output in the Baltimore standouts Metal Hearts, or the Somerville-based Travels, might be surprised to hear that there’s yet another plane of hushed introspection to uncover. But this release from his New Dog solo project digs deeper under the covers for a sick day of the heart. With stripped-down instrumentation, a delicate guitar riff, distant horn touches, and a hesitant, playful piano synth, songs like “I’m Your Man” (a Richard Hell and the Voidoids cover) lay bare Badalov’s slightly skewed lovelorn confessions. “Dog Bite” is a largely instrumental track that devolves into static percussion, while “Smoking in the Living Room” glistens with brightly interlocking guitar lines. “Do you wanna start a family? You can almost smell the fire. Do you wanna see the flames?” he asks on the slow-burn bucolic folk of “Baltimore,” sounding both ominous and amorous at once, a pretty close approximation of the record’s overall unsettling affect.

“Lost Weekend” will be available Nov. 26 at
