ALBUM REVIEW | SOUL

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, ‘Give the People What They Want’

This fifth album from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings was supposed to arrive last August but was postponed when Jones learned that she had cancer. Her treatment is now behind her, and Jones and company sound at the top of their game. The formula is familiar: plenty of old-school funk and deep soul, along with forays in other vintage soul directions. The funk rolls around four tracks in with the slinky horns and echoing guitars of “You’ll be Lonely,” and it gets languid and moody on “Slow Down Love” and even a little swampy with the spectacular, smoldering intensity of “Long Time, Wrong Time.” Elsewhere, “Retreat!” oozes a layered, lush sound, and “Stranger in My House” leans Motown with its propulsive gait, honking bari sax, and chanting background singers. The sound of those vocal accompanists is all over this record, from the girl-group harmonies of “Making Up and Breaking Up” to their weaving give-and-take commentary on “People Don’t Get What They Deserve.” That’s a bit of a new twist in this band’s well-established groove. (Out Tuesday)
