This year’s Newport Folk Festival kicked off Friday and continues through Sunday evening with gospel-soul firebrand Mavis Staples. This weekend’s festival is jammed with artists shaping the parameters of modern folk, writes the Globe’s James Reed. The lineup includes Jack White, Nickel Creek, Deer Tick, Mavis, Jeff Tweedy, and Valerie June. (A full schedule is at www.newportfolk.org.)
Reed is tweeting from Newport, along with others on the scene.

Favorite moment at Newport today: just watched Jack White take an impromptu Polaroid of a baby in a stroller. Then left it with the baby.— James Reed (@GlobeJamesReed) July 26, 2014
