Radio 92.9 EarthFest invites Boston bands to vie for opening slot

The Radio 92.9 EarthFest will take place May 21. Handout

The 2016 Rock & Roll Rumble has yet to stop rumbling, and already Boston bands have another opportunity to snatch some spotlight. Radio 92.9 EarthFest, the popular outdoor music festival meant to promote environmentally friendly products, practices, and nonprofit organizations, has invited local acts to sign up for a chance to play the opening slot at this year’s show.

Bands and performers interested in taking a shot at the fest’s 25-minute opening spot are encouraged to enter via the Radio 92.9 website. The five acts that receive the most votes by May 8 will face off during a live showcase at the Hard Rock Cafe on May 14, where a panel of expert judges will pick the winning entrant.

The EarthFest show, which last year was rolled into the larger Outside the Box festival, returns to indie status this year and is scheduled to be held on May 21 at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell. A complete list of performers — minus the opening act, of course — will be announced April 22.
