Babs-heads, can you hear me? Singer-actress-activist-philanthropist-non-nail-biter Barbra Streisand may be coming to TV, according to Deadline, as the costar of yet another new series from Ryan Murphy.
Called “The Politician,” the project will star Tony-winner Ben Platt, from the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” as a wealthy Californian with political aspirations. Interestingly, there is talk of including musical numbers in several episodes of the hourlong show, which will be a comedy imbued with social commentary. Each season will center on a different political race that Platt’s character is involved in.
Netflix won “The Politician” after a bidding war that included Hulu and Amazon, and the show has a two-season order. Murphy is already in business with Netflix on an upcoming series called “Ratched,” starring Sarah Paulson as a younger Nurse Ratched from “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” According to Deadline, Murphy will direct the premiere of “The Politician,” and Streisand may also direct a few episodes down the line.
Like Streisand, Gwyneth Paltrow is in negotiations to costar. If things work out, both actresses will also produce. Paltrow is engaged to one of the show’s creators, former local boy Brad Falchuk, Murphy’s longtime collaborator.Matthew Gilbert can be reached at email@example.com.
