On Demand movie highlights

(Comcast Movie Collections: Drama) A hit man (Jason Statham of the “Transporter” movies) is dosed with a lethal drug and has to keep his heart racing to stay alive. That’s right, it’s “Speed” in a human being. The movie’s a preposterously amusing junkyard dog of an action flick for the first hour; unfortunately, the script runs out of gas before the hero does. With Amy Smart. (R; runs through Dec. 31)

Ty Burr

(Comcast Movie Collections: Mystery) A mug of poisoned eggnog for the holiday season. Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench play teachers at a rough-and-tumble London school; one gets involved with a student, the other blackmails herself into the seducer’s daily life. The movie’s about discreet obsessions spiraling out of control, and it’s an oddly satisfying hybrid — a highbrow suspense freak-out. Blanchett is very good, Dench astounding. Directed by Richard Eyre (“Iris”). (R; runs through Dec. 31)

(Comcast Movie Collections: Mystery) A beautifully burnished mood piece, drawn from a couple of Stephen King stories, about a boy whose life in a shabby Connecticut house with his widowed mother is changed forever by his encounter with an old man who may have supernatural powers. Anthony Hopkins is mesmerizing as the dumpy but magical duffer, and the other characterizations are lovingly showcased and bathed in rich atmosphere by Scott Hicks. (PG-13; runs through Dec. 31)
