STAR TREK ★★★★
(Comcast Movie Collections: Summer Blockbusters) Almost ridiculously satisfying, J.J. Abrams’s franchise reboot approaches the late Gene Roddenberry’s original science-fiction world not on bended knee but with fresh eyes, a spring in its step, and the understanding that we know these characters better than they know themselves. (PG-13; runs through June 25)
FIERCE PEOPLE ★★
(Comcast Movie Collections: Drama) A masseuse (Diane Lane) and her 15-year-old son (Anton Yelchin) move onto the country estate of an old moneybags (Donald Sutherland). Director Griffin Dunne strives to create a portrait of social corrosion in the land of the anciently wealthy, circa 1980. But nothing is as funny, touching, true, or sad as it should be. The movie is also confused. It wants to cut the wealthy open with a spoon. (R; runs through Dec. 31)
ED WOOD ★★★½
(Comcast Movie Collections: Comedy) By all rights, this should be a camp trifle, filled with the cheesy awfulness that marked the output of the legendary shlockmeister (“Plan 9 From Outer Space”) and the bizarre repertory company he gathered around himself. But it turns into a tenderly affecting take not only on Wood’s demented mix of optimism and denial, but on the maniacal hopes and drives and aspirations behind all the movies Hollywood ever made. Johnny Depp’s Ed Wood is part of a line of director Tim Burton surrogates that includes “Edward Scissorhands.” Martin Landau won an Oscar for his magnificent, ruined Bela Lugosi. (R; runs through Dec. 31)
