What’s on TV tonight: Critic’s corner for Friday, June 8

Tony Awards Sunday, 8 p.m., Channel 4

Go-to host Neil Patrick Harris returns for a third stint for Broadway’s biggest night. The “How I Met Your Mother” star and Broadway veteran has proven himself a terrific emcee, singing, dancing, quipping, and mugging with never-let-’em-see-you-sweat elan. An eclectic group of nominees are up for theater’s highest honor, many with local ties; they include the production of “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess”, which began life at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge and garnered 10 nominations, including best musical, best director for the ART’s Diane Paulus, and best actress for Audra McDonald.

Mad Men Sunday, 10 p.m., AMC

It has been an unremittingly bleak time at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce — (R.I.P. Pryce) — in season five. But there have been standout moments for each member of the sometimes polarizing cast. Say what you will about the scummy manipulations of Pete Campbell but Vincent Kartheiser has played them perfectly. John Slattery has done the same as the momentarily LSD-awakened Roger Sterling. And as all the women in his life — wife Megan, daughter Sally, protegee Peggy, friend Joan — spin out of Don Draper’s control, Jon Hamm (pictured with Jessica Pare) has been the picture of frustrated mojo. It all comes to a close with Sunday’s season finale. (I’m hoping Don meets Peggy for a slice at the Pizza House to catch up on her new job.)
