NANCY DREW

(Comcast Movie Collections: Mystery) How do you keep your kids in River Heights when they’ve seen Hogwarts? The movie version of the teen-sleuth book series dives into the abyss between earnest and ironic, and promptly loses its way. Still, it has just enough wit to make you realize it could have been worse. Starring Emma Roberts as Nancy, who relocates to Los Angeles and puts the mean girls in their place. (PG; runs through 2016)

THE GOLDEN BOYS ½

(Comcast Movie Collections: Comedy) David Carradine, Rip Torn, and Bruce Dern share a big, dirty house on the water in 1905 Chatham. They’re seamen. They’re single. They’re crotchety, and they’re acting up a squall. The gist is that a woman is wanted to tidy their house and their lives. (unrated; runs through 2016)

PANIC

(Comcast Movie Collections: Crime) This atmospheric, splendidly acted hit-man-on-a-psychiatrist’s-couch movie is neither “The Sopranos” nor “Analyze This.” It’s brooding and haunting, making good use of alienation-laden LA visuals as it focuses on William H. Macy’s stressed assassin for hire, ready to explode if he can’t get out from under the thumb of his domineering hit-man father (Donald Sutherland). Neve Campbell contributes a top performance as another analyst and to whom Macy’s attracted, he hopes not fatally. (R; runs through 2015)
