BLOOD WORK ★★★
(Comcast Movie Collections: Selected Directors: Clint Eastwood) In his 23d picture, Eastwood plays a cop with a transplanted heart, tracking down its donor’s killer. It sounds absurd and often is, but Eastwood directs with a tight burnish that makes even the love story between him and the donor’s sister (Wanda De Jesus) nothing less than sincere and highly watchable. (R; runs through Dec. 31)
RAIN MAN ★★★½
(Comcast Movie Collections: Selected Directors: Barry Levinson) Dustin Hoffman is mesmerizing as an autistic man yanked out of a sheltering institution by his angry brother (Tom Cruise), who wants to finagle him out of an inheritance. This human computer can’t bear eye contact, and he hasn’t got much to say beyond “Yeah” and “Uh-oh.” But he’s touching, eloquent, and sometimes surprisingly funny in this offbeat, Oscar-winning performance. (R; runs through Dec. 31)
TRUE CRIME ★★
(Comcast Movie Collections: Selected Directors: Clint Eastwood) Eastwood is slyly funny as a newspaper reporter juggling reprobate ways and professional savvy as he goes to bat for a death row inmate he’s convinced is innocent. Because there’s more emphasis on characterization and atmosphere than on formulas, and because this film is so far above the genre average, you forgive the climactic car chase. (R; runs through Dec. 31)
