AMERICAN WEDDING ★★
(HBO Movies) As crass, unimaginative, and poorly made as it is, this third “American Pie” outing is a vulgar bonanza for Seann William Scott, who reprises his role as the insatiably horny jock, bully, and dork Steve Stifler. Directed by Jesse Dylan (Bob’s son), the film celebrates the limited comic imagination of Adam Herz’s script. (R; runs through Aug. 6)
CHARLIE BARTLETT ★★★
(Showtime) It takes a minute for this high school comedy to distinguish itself from the movies (“Rushmore,” say) it appears to be ripping off. But once it does, the movie transforms into an exuberant, unexpectedly smart comedy about the fraught symbiosis between kids and grownups. The title hero (Anton Yelchin) is a preppie who becomes popular at his new public school. Robert Downey Jr. is the principal. Hope Davis is mom. And Yelchin is uncannily good. Actually, the whole cast is. (R; runs through Aug. 7)
AS GOOD AS IT GETS ★★★
(Free Movies) Jack Nicholson is a curmudgeon who got rich writing romance novels, and Helen Hunt the waitress who puts up with him in the restaurant he obsessively frequents. They’re both enormously entertaining, and Greg Kinnear is a plus, too, as the neighbor whose problems bring them together until, in Hunt’s words, Nicholson ruins it by being himself. It’s like a super sitcom, smartly character-driven by Nicholson and Hunt. (PG-13; runs through Oct. 20)
