THE TREE OF LIFE ★★½
(HBO) This is a collection of conversations that lost souls and true believers have with themselves while keeping their heads to the sky. But the movie is church via the planetarium. (PG-13, runs through Aug. 20)
THE GREEN HORNET ★★
(Starz) What if a masked crime fighter was an obnoxious lout? Star Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry undermine every promise a superhero movie is supposed to make with subversive comic verve, but the parody becomes a train wreck in the final hour. Taiwanese pop singer Jay Chou plays Kato, who turns out to have more talent than his boss. (PG-13; runs through Aug. 30)
NO MAN’S LAND ★★★
(Comcast Free Movies) Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic’s black comedy nails the absurdity of the carnage attached to all wars, even though he focuses on the one in Bosnia in the 1990s. Blame is doled out equally to Bosnians and Serbs, to say nothing of a politically motivated UN commander, during a standoff in a trench dominated by a ticking bomb. (R; runs through Sept. 4)
