Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Michelle Faye/AMC

Hell on Wheels Sunday at 9 p.m., AMC

This series didn’t get a ton of critical acclaim during its first season. Many writers compared it to “Deadwood,” since it is a gritty western. And most westerns fail in comparison to the HBO classic. But on its own terms, “Hell on Wheels” is engaging and atmospheric. Set right after the Civil War, it follows Anson Mount’s former Confederate soldier on a mission of revenge against the Union soldiers who killed his wife and child. He’s a sympathetic, fast-shooting mess, and he’s surrounded by vivid characters including Christopher Heyerdahl’s “The Swede” and Common as a freed slave. If’n y’all like westerns, it’s worth a look, especially in this month of TV-series down time before the fall. Pictured: Mount.
