Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Greg Gayne/FX Network

Anger Management 9:30 p.m., FX

It had to happen. Martin Sheen joins Charlie Sheen’s show in a recurring role tonight, and he’ll be playing Charlie’s father. Also inevitable: FX head John Landgraf says the odds are “overwhelming” that the show will be picked up for 90 more episodes. Yeah, 90. That was part of the deal Sheen cut with the network — if you pick it up, you buy enough to make syndication. That means a lot more money for Charlie, and a lot more Charlie for you, because I know you love him.

Wilfred 10 p.m., FX

I know this show is uneven, but, as a dog lover, it is giving me lots of pleasure this summer. The main reason? Jason Gann (pictured, with Elijah Wood) as Wilfred, the dog who is a man in a dog suit. His performance is original and certainly better than a number of this year’s Emmy nominees for comedy actor, notably Jon Cryer and Don Cheadle. Gann, who also writes and produces, finds that place where dog and human behaviors overlap and milks it. His timing is just right.
