Oprah’s Next Chapter
8:30 p.m., OWN

Fresh off her triumphs in London, US gold medal Olympian Gabby Douglas takes the obvious next step: an interview with Oprah. We have no doubt the poised, cheerful, and charismatic gymnast will nimbly stick the landing. After Douglas, Winfrey checks in with Kelsey Grammer, who is currently showing everyone who is “Boss” over on Starz. Although we’ll likely hear about his divorce and remarriage, we’re more curious as to when Sideshow Bob will be back on “The Simpsons.”

The Newsroom  10 p.m., HBO

The first season of this Aaron Sorkin cable news drama has deservedly received both positive and negative buzz. The depictions of some of the female characters have been problematic, but elsewhere the writing has been solidly thoughtful and funny. It can be insufferably preachy but also poignant. As a musical theater fan, I love Sorkin’s nods to Broadway. Speaking of which, we just knew the producers wouldn’t cast the great Hope Davis — who appeared opposite “Newsroom” star Jeff Daniels (above) in “God of Carnage” on Broadway — as gossip columnist Nina Howard for one measly appearance. In Sunday’s finale the “TMI” “takedown” artist reappears to drop a bombshell. Jane Fonda also returns as formidable ACN chief Leona Lansing.
