Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight?

A few channels will cover the night, including PBS, MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN, and there will be Web coverage, too. But major networks ABC, NBC, and CBS won’t kick in to the event until 10 p.m. This week’s infomercial – er, I mean convention – is in Charlotte, N.C., with President Obama scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech on Thursday. Until then, we can only dream of a leftie version of Clint Eastwood taking the stage.

Boardwalk Empire: Distilling Season 2 9:45 p.m., HBO

I’m glad some of the networks give us recaps of the previous season. These refresher courses come in handy when shows, particularly those on cable, have been off the air for what seems like a year. Tonight, HBO is breezing through season two of “Boardwalk Empire” in 15 minutes, in anticipation of season three, which premieres on Sept. 16. I am looking forward.
