Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

The X Factor 8 p.m., Channel 25

Here we go, on the road to nowhere. Simon Cowell’s music contest returns, this time with an extra gimmick: Britney Spears (pictured). Will she wreck, will Simon be too nice or too mean to her, will she and the other new judge, Demi Lovato, compete with each other? New talent? Bah, who cares anymore?

Guys With Kids 10 p.m., Channel 7

Guess what? Fathers are now active in raising their children. It’s true! This lousy new sitcom, produced by Jimmy Fallon and previewed tonight, seems to find most of its humor in the fact that dudes can actually take care of kids. Predictably, the women in their lives tend to be unpleasant and emasculating. The stock, dated situation isn’t helped by the lazy writing — there’s hardly a funny moment in the pilot, even if the “studio audience” feels differently. The cast members, including Anthony Anderson, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Tempestt Bledsoe, and Jesse Bradford, aren’t bad, but they’re stranded in a completely unnecessary show.
