THE CABIN IN THE WOODS ★★★
(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) A clever, bloody, funny spin on the doomed-teens genre, with director Drew Goddard (“Cloverfield”) and co-writer Joss Whedon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) gradually taking their little genre riff into cosmic-comic sci-fi territory. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are delightful as office drones with a stake in the proceedings. (R; runs through Jan. 30)
THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY ★★★
(Encore on Comcast) An overly slick but ultimately moving human epic about a young Amerasian man (newcomer Damien Nguyen, excellent) and his harrowing journey from his Vietnamese village to Houston to find his ex-GI father (Nick Nolte). A romance with Bai Ling, absurdly glamorous in her role as a fellow refugee, fails to convince, but the final scenes feel hard-earned and spot on. Directed by Hans Petter Moland. (R; runs through March 24)
BALTO ★★★
(Comcast Free Movies) This animated adventure about sled dogs in Alaska is a treat. The title hero is a wolf/husky half-breed who comes through in the clutch when a shipment of medicine has to make it to Nome, Alaska, during a diphtheria epidemic in 1925. Balto’s arrogant rival sled dog is a good villain; comic relief is well taken care of by a Russian-accented goose (voice by Bob Hoskins); and there’s even a “Lady and the Tramp”-style love story. (G; runs through Oct. 18)
