KUNG FU PANDA 2 ½

(HBO on Comcast) Jack Black plays the bear named Po in this animated sequel. This time adoption and Po’s search for his true identity drive a story that’s artfully illustrated but so heavy it sometimes steps on its star’s one talent: riffing with silly abandon. (PG; runs through Nov. 12)

BOOGIE NIGHTS ½

(Cinemax on Comcast) Paul Thomas Anderson’s film about an extended dysfunctional family of porn-movie makers, circa 1977-1984, is splashy and sentimental, candy-coating the drugs ’n’ disco days and the damaged people trying to wring stature and visibility from them. But it has surprising panache and confidence, and it features standout performances by Mark Wahlberg as the dim but sweet stud and Burt Reynolds as the surprisingly mellow and steadying porn director and impresario.
(R; runs through Nov. 8)

(Comcast Free Movies) A strong directorial debut from Sean Penn, with urgent performances and pungent atmosphere in a story inspired by a Bruce Springsteen song about two brothers on opposite sides of the law in Nebraska. (R; runs through
