On Demand movie highlights

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Two couples and their friend become housemates in a glorious French manse. The movie seeks to hug and lick, until it gathers a quiet mournfulness in the last scenes. By then you’ve been licked to death. With Geraldine Chaplin, Daniel Brühl, Pierre Richard, Guy Bedos, Claude Rich, and Jane Fonda, who speaks French so flamboyantly that France must have a word for the French she’s speaking. In French, with English subtitles. (Unrated; runs through Dec. 26)

Wesley Morris

(HBO on Comcast) With his wife in a coma, a prosperous Hawaii lawyer (George Clooney) has to cope with all the parts of his life he didn’t know. A somewhat minor work from director Alexander Payne (“Sideways,’’ “About Schmidt’’) that’s also a movingly rich pleasure about compromise and connection. With Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller as the hero’s daughters. (R; runs through Dec. 31)

Ty Burr

(Comcast Free Movies) Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn star as a pair of young Americans who sell top secret documents to the Soviet Union in John Schlesinger’s adaptation of Robert Lindsey’s nonfiction book. Despite fine performances by Penn and Hutton, the film wanders from theme to theme without proper dramatic development. (R; runs through Jan. 24)
