On Demand movie highlights

ALONE IN THE DARK

(Showtime on Comcast) Three escaped mental patients (Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Erland van Lidth) on a killing spree. A surprisingly effective slice-and-dice cheapie; cool, controlled direction by Jack Sholder, who also wrote the script. (R; runs through Jan. 8)

STEALING BEAUTY ½

(Comcast Free Movies) A welcome return to form for Bernardo Bertolucci, and a star-making performance by Liv Tyler. She’s a savvy yet tentative 19-year-old summering among long-term expatriates at the Tuscan villa her mother visited before committing suicide. Nicely faceted on an intimate scale. (R; runs through Nov. 20)

SUGAR TOWN ½

(Starz on Comcast) Allison Anders and Kurt Voss draw a bead on a bunch of aging rockers knocking around LA, trying to jump-start their careers. They get flavorful performances from Michael Des Barres, Ally Sheedy, Lucinda Janney, Rosanna Arquette, Jade Gordon, and Beverly D’Angelo, among others, but this project came together too quickly. Its unavoidably apparent haste and ramshackle construction make you wish they had rewritten it one more time before shooting. (R; runs through Dec. 30)
