    Critic’s Corner: Saturday, November 3

    Macall B. Polay

Boardwalk Empire Sunday at 9 p.m., HBO

The whole Gillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) story line has taken an extremely strange turn. We knew she was twisted, what with the whole incest thing. But now that she has found a faux Jimmy, had her way with him, and sent him to that great bathtub in the sky, she has achieved a new level of crazy. Go girl. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to saying goodbye to Bobby Cannavale one of these days. I usually like him, but his overacting as Gyp Rosetti is wearing. Pictured: Mol and Cannavale.

Call the Midwife Sunday at 8 p.m., Channel 2

This sweet – too sweet? – series finishes its first season Sunday night. The sweet nuns and nurses of the East End continue to be lovely and cute as Sister Monica is accused of theft and Chummy’s mother visits to meet her boyfriend. I like the show OK, but I’m not sure why it was such a ratings smash in England. A yearning for sentimentality? Jessica Raine, by the way, looks like a young Judy Garland, no?
