On Demand movie highlights

THE LONELIEST PLANET ½

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) An engaged couple (Hani Furstenberg and Gael Garcia Bernal) take a vacation in the Georgian Caucasus, where a small, dangerous incident provokes a response that changes the rest of the trip. The increasingly brilliant American writer and director Julia Loktev wonders what happens when a stupid glitch or a selfish gesture upends your belief — be it romantic or religious. How do you go on? (Unrated; runs through Jan. 21)

THE CAMPAIGN

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) The time is ripe for a good, nasty political comedy, but this isn’t it. Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis play two idiots facing off in a North Carolina congressional race; some bawdy laughs are there, but they’re broad as a barn, and a turn to Capra-esque sentiment in the last act is disastrous. Directed by Jay Roach. (R; runs through March 29)

HOLY SMOKE ½

(Encore on Comcast) This throwback to Jane Campion’s “Sweetie” and “The Piano” begins in an exciting burst of raw, anarchic energy. It’s carried by Kate Winslet’s thrillingly fearless performance as an Australian looking for something more spiritual than her stifling family. But the film goes off the track when she’s brought back from India and thrown together with a cult deprogrammer played by Harvey Keitel. It stops being about her search and her risk-taking and starts being about his shaky ego as they plunge into a mundane battle of the sexes. (R; runs through Jan. 31)
