Happy Endings 9 p.m., Channel 5
This show has gotten a bit gonzo in its third season. Some of the subplots turn a little bit surreal as they develop, and the writers are letting the actors go nuts. Eliza Coupe, in particular, is having a good time. She likes to mug, and they like to let her mug. Tonight, Max becomes a hit on the bar mitzvah circuit as an MC — which I’m picturing as Laurence Olivier in “The Entertainer.” Pictured: Damon Wayans Jr., Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, Casey Wilson.
The Mindy Project 9:30 p.m., Channel 25
Turns out Mindy on “The Mindy Project” is not as far as we thought from Kelly Kapoor on “The Office.” Aside from the whole being-a-good-doctor thing, she’s absurdly superficial. But Mindy Kaling is funny, and she pulls off this balancing act between smart and ridiculous. I’m not sure about Chris Messina’s character, Danny — he’s still an unlikely romantic interest. But maybe that’s the point — the show will have him grow nicer while turning Mindy into a better person.
