Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Kelsey McNeal

Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 9:30 p.m., Channel 5

Sometimes I wish the show just had the James Van Der Beek story line, with Krysten Ritter’s Chloe as his friend. Van Der Beek (above) is having a great time as a fictionalized version of himself who is shallow and narcissistic. Like Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Matt LeBlanc on “Episodes,” Wil Wheaton on “The Big Bang Theory,” and Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant on “Life’s Too Short,” he does self-mockery with the right touch.

New Girl 9 p.m., Channel 25

Sitcoms are generally about youngish people, right? From “How I Met Your Mother” and “The Big Bang Theory” to “Parks and Recreation,” most of the characters are under 35. So it’s always interesting to see which older TV stars turn up as the parents. Tonight, we meet Jess’s folks, played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner. They’re divorced, but Jess wants to get them back together.
