(TMC on Comcast) This is a solidly made Army mystery about an AWOL soldier just back from Iraq and the father who’s come looking for answers. The writer and director Paul Haggis (“Crash”) is looking for something devastating to say about the war and the military and he overreaches. Had the camera never left Jones, the movie would be some kind of masterpiece. With Charlize Theron as a beleaguered detective and Susan Sarandon as Jones’s wife. (R; runs through Jan. 17)

(Cinemax on Comcast) Or, as it is probably called in Martin Scorsese’s house, “Taxi Driver Lite.” Jodie Foster plays a New York radio talk show host who goes on a vigilante bender when she and her boyfriend are assaulted. This is not just another Jodie Foster picture. It is the ultimate Jodie Foster picture, an entertaining if absurd walking tour of a movie star’s psyche and persona. Directed by Neil Jordan. With Terrence Howard as the man on Foster’s trail. (R; runs through Jan. 17)

(HBO on Comcast) A bereaved Irish family moves to New York looking for inner peace after a child’s death. They learn how to let go of loss and get busy living, thanks to their sickly African neighbor, a problematic creation played by the talented Djimon Hounsou. The film is based on director Jim Sheridan’s own move to America, which according to this movie was a lesson-laden, tear-jerking fairy tale. (PG-13; runs through Jan. 21)
