Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV tonight

JON LEMAY/ABC

Nashville 10 p.m., Channel 5

I am happy to see that the show has kept Michiel Huisman’s Liam on for a series of episodes. Huisman, who is from the Netherlands, has a lovely, gentle presence that can also veer into bad-boy territory. Fans of “Treme” know him as the street musician Sonny, who has struggled with drug abuse. On “Nashville,” he’s the producer who has helped Rayna find her new sound. Wednesday night, Rayna’s husband, Teddy, reveals his suspicions about the relationship between Rayna (Connie Britton) and Liam.

Modern Family 9 p.m., Channel 5

This series does resort to sentimental resolutions, which is probably why it’s such a big hit. Most comedies embraced by the mainstream deliver a few “aww” moments along the way. Not that that’s a bad thing; Jay’s sweet approach to his stepson, Manny, and Phil’s love for his kids are among the show’s finest flourishes. But: Now that Gloria has had a baby, I’m hoping the sitcom won’t push the sweet stuff too hard. Babies are famous sitcom wreckers. On Wednesday, Gloria’s mother and sister visit.
