On Demand movie highlights

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

(HBO on Comcast) Hey, a twister just ate the Hollywood sign! Now that’s entertainment — for about 20 minutes. The rest of Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic feels like the most expensive PowerPoint presentation ever made. The movie is about the ravages of global warming, with Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal starring in a father-saves-his-son subplot. (PG-13; runs through Feb. 25)

BLUE IN THE FACE

(Showtime on Comcast) Because it was largely improvised, this companion piece to “Smoke” is looser, freer, loopier, and altogether more engaging. It becomes a communal hymn to its small corner of Brooklyn, N.Y., with a screenful of warmly engaging performances by Harvey Keitel, Giancarlo Esposito, Mel Gorham, Victor Argo, and Lily Tomlin. (R; runs through Feb. 19)

THE ROAD TO EL DORADO ½

(HBO on Comcast) Spanish rascals go to the New World for gold in DreamWorks Animation’s so-so film based on an old European legend. The plot here is more efficient than inspired. Except for a Mayan scamster voiced by Rosie Perez, it plays like “Ishtar” with computer graphics. (PG; runs through Feb. 25)
