HESHER ½

(Cinemax on Comcast) A grieving young boy (Devin Brochu) is yanked back to reality by a mysterious, foul-mouthed headbanger. Fans of Joseph Gordon-Levitt are in for a shock: The actor gives a fearsome and giddily unhinged performance in a movie that isn’t entirely sure what to do with it. With Natalie Portman, Rainn Wilson, and Piper Laurie. (R; runs through Feb. 28)

ROUNDERS

(Cinemax on Comcast) Another juicy Matt Damon movie that is conventional, yet smoothly managed. It plunges us into an underground world of high-stakes poker. A reformed poker wizard (Damon), now trying to pursue a law degree, is sucked back into the game after his buddy, Edward Norton, plays a few bad hands. (R; runs through March 7)

(Cinemax on Comcast) A wonderful adaption by Terrence Malick of James Jones’s epic World War II novel about a rifle company on Guadalcanal. The film alternates between typically hellish battle scenes and introspective ones during which we find what’s going on in the hearts and minds of the GIs. Had Malick been given more time to trim and shape, this could easily have been a classic. (R; runs through March 7)
