ARGO

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Ben Affleck directed this highly entertaining if shallow film based on the actual story of six embassy employees led out of Iran by a CIA hostage specialist played by Affleck. Affleck is the first actor since Warren Beatty’s generation of stars to make a persuasive case for himself as a talented Hollywood filmmaker. He applies lightness but not too much. He’s serious but innocent of the pomposity that comes out of certain kinds of seriousness. (R; runs through July 19)

ANNA KARENINA ½

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Joe Wright’s adaptation of the Tolstoy classic staggers under the weight of a dazzling, hermetically sealed visual style that fails to connect with our emotions; the entire movie seems to take place in a snow globe. The cast, led by Keira Knightley, is good, although Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Vronsky may be too much the boy-toy. With Jude Law. (R; runs through July 25)

THE WOODS

(Comcast Free Movies) A girls’ school in the sticks turns out to be even scarier than rebellious Heather Fasulo (Agnes Bruckner) thought when she first drove up on orientation day. Fasulo and creepy headmistress Ms. Traverse (Patricia Clarkson) lend smarts to this supernatural flick from director Lucky McKee. (R; runs through April 9)
