Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Thursday

Da Vinci’s Demons 7:30 p.m., Starz

This is a flawed but enterprising and entertaining new show, which mixes up period drama, mysticism, playful action, sexual situations, murder, “The Name of the Rose,” and oddly Sherlock Holmesian detecting. In other words, it is unique. Tom Riley (above) plays Leonardo Da Vinci in his 20s, a dashing fellow always ready with a quip but also a troubled man who uses drugs to calm his hyperactive brain. The plot lines don’t quite come clear in the premiere, which Starz is re-airing on Thursday night. But more will make sense after Friday’s episode 2.
