Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Wednesday night

The Americans 10 p.m., FX

The first season, which ends on Wednesday night, has had many strong moments, even if there were plot repetitions in between. Ten episodes, instead of 13, might have better suited the story line. But Keri Russell was endlessly watchable and surprising as she circled between ice cold, kick-ass, and emotionally fearful. She also established herself near the top of the elite class of TV wig-wearers, alongside Jennifer Garner in “Alias.” And Matthew Rhys showed that he can be an exciting and faceted leading man, as well as one of those Brits with a perfect American accent. I’m looking forward to season 2, which has already been ordered by FX.
