THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR ½ (Showtime on Comcast) A stunningly well-acted grown-up drama that probes how tragedy can amplify one’s best and worst impulses until you can’t tell them apart. Jeff Bridges plays a charismatic heel of a famous author and Kim Basinger his wife, shell-shocked after a family tragedy and drawn to her husband’s young summer assistant (Jon Foster). Adapted by director Tod Williams from the first third of John Irving’s novel “A Widow for One Year.” (R; runs through Aug. 25)

GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS

(Starz on Comcast) “Titanic” director James Cameron returns to the subject and location of his greatest success for a one-hour 3-D IMAX documentary dive down to the wreckage of the great ship. Using submersibles and nifty little camera-bots that scurry through the decaying staterooms and hallways, the film is breathtaking — and a moving spectacle that salvages the Titanic as mute testimony to human ambition and disaster. (R; runs through Nov. 30)

MALLRATS ½

(Showtime on Comcast) This bigger-budgeted outing by the “Clerks” team has freshly engaging moments, many of them arising from its sexual candor and a lot more physical comedy. Mostly, though, it blands out — like the suburban shopping mall where most of it is set. (R; runs through Aug. 25)
