On Demand movie highlights

(Showtime on Comcast) First-time filmmaker Dito Montiel aspires to show us what caused him to leave his Queens neighborhood in 1986 and, according to the movie, stay gone for 20 years. All we can really glean is that the place was too loud. Robert Downey Jr. plays the older Montiel, Shia LaBeouf the adolescent incarnation, but neither is able to convey what makes him very distinctive (R; runs through July 23)

Wesley Morris

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) Barbra Streisand as a noodgy mom and Seth Rogen as a stressed-out son in a tiny car driving across America. It’s silly, predictable, and surprisingly sweet — the sort of thing you can and probably should take your own mother to. The stars are believable as parent and child, but who’s the father, Fozzie Bear? (PG-13; runs through Sept. 19)

Ty Burr

(Starz on Comcast) Actor-turned-writer-director Stuart Townsend applies the docu-fiction model to the street protests that rocked the title city when the World Trade Organization came for a visit in late 1999. A big cast plays characters on all sides of the conflict but TV-movie dialogue and Townsend’s muddled sympathies cloud the picture. Featuring Woody Harrelson, Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta, Martin Henderson, Michelle Rodriguez, Andre Benjamin, and Channing Tatum (R; runs through Aug. 1)
