Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Thursday

Renovation Raiders 9 p.m., HGTV

Here’s the gimmick on this new series: Homeowners innocently go out for dinner. While they’re away, contractor Amy Matthews (pictured) and her crew spring into action and renovate one of their rooms. Matthews has already cased the joint and mocked up the job. It sounds an awful lot like TLC’s “While You Were Out” because, well, it is. Every reality show, from “American Idol” to “Pawn Stars,” has a duplicate or two out there.

National Spelling Bee 8 p.m., ESPN

Prepare to have your nerves wracked. ESPN is airing the finals of the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, which is A-W-E-S-O-M-E and C-U-T-E. The contest will feature 281 spellers between the ages of 8 to 14, with only one 8-year-old. Nearly 90 percent of them are between 12 and 14. The winner takes home $30,000, a trophy, and a whole lot of G-L-O-R-Y. Pictured: 2012 winner Snigdha Nandipati, 14, of San Diego.
