On Demand movie highlights

(Encore on Comcast) Unfinished is about right. Lasse Hallström’s drama stars Robert Redford as a sullen rancher who reluctantly shelters his estranged daughter-in-law (Jennifer Lopez) and grandkid who’ve fled an abusive boyfriend. Redford seems to be playing one of Clint Eastwood’s lovable misanthropes, but the grit doesn’t suit him. And his cranky, touching friendship with Morgan Freeman just makes you miss Clint all the more. It’s “Quarter-Million Dollar Baby.” (PG-13; runs through Aug. 31)

Wesley Morris

(Starz on Comcast) Karen Moncrieff’s provocative and unnerving debut film follows the relationship between a lonely, isolated teenage girl (Agnes Bruckner) and her writing teacher (David Strathairn) as they progress from poetry discussions into deeper and clammier waters. “Car” is absorbing drama when it’s not trying too hard, and it also might serve for a bent but worthy mother/daughter bonding night at the movies. (R; runs through
Sept. 13)

Ty Burr

(Encore on Comcast) Likable fluff, marking the directing debut of actress Bonnie Hunt. The romantic comedy is driven by warm, engaging performances from David Duchovny as a depressed widower and Minnie Driver as a shy artist. Neither realizes that she’s the recipient of his late wife’s transplanted heart. This one wants to be another “Moonstruck,” but settles for a lot of Dean Martin on the soundtrack. (PG; runs through Sept. 30)
