The Million Second Quiz 8 p.m., NBC

This 10-night event, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, pits trivia buffs against each other in a quest to win 10 million smackers, or roughly what Seacrest gets for doing just one of his 11 jobs. The show has several twists, including that it’s live, the contestants are constantly under surveillance in an hourglass structure while they compete essentially nonstop. Anyone remember “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” Viewers can also play along at home and compete for the chance to actually appear on the primetime broadcast.

Exploding Sun 8 p.m., Reelz

In case the title of this disaster movie wasn’t clear, the sun is exploding. We can thank the folks on the first-ever commercial space shuttle, because when they are struck by a solar storm it sets the controls for the heart of the sun, which in turn will trigger a solar event that will send Earth back to the Stone Age. David James Elliott and Julia Ormond (above) are among those who are feeling the burn.

Mistresses 9 p.m., ABC

All over but the paternity test.

The Arsenio Hall Show 11 p.m., CW
