On Demand movie highlights

Reign Over Me ½

(Encore on Comcast) Adam Sandler’s in serious mode as a shell-shocked New Yorker whose family perished on 9/11, and Don Cheadle plays the former college roommate who tries to bring him back to the land of the living. Mike Binder’s film sounds like mawkish male-bonding therapy porn and occasionally it is, but it honors the sound of men hanging around saying nothing. Don’t ask about the women, though. (R; runs through Feb. 24)

Ty Burr

Celeste and Jesse Forever½

(Starz on Comcast) A mostly charming LA comedy-drama, co-written by star Rashida Jones with a warm, slightly blinkered insider’s eye to the city and its neighborhoods. Despite the title (and Andy Samberg’s genial performance as Jesse), it’s mostly about the furiously prim Celeste (Jones) and how she learns to accept other people’s imperfections and her own. (R; runs through April 3)

Ty Burr

(Comcast Free Movies) Costa-Gavras’s political thriller combines the suspense of diplomatic intrigue with the horror of totalitarian regimes in a story that adds a personal touch to the struggle. The film sympathetically chronicles the anguish of a father searching for his son and a wife looking for her husband in a land ravaged by savageness. Jack Lemmon, as the father, delivers one of his best performances. (R; runs through March 31)
