Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Wednesday

Frank Ockenfels/FX

The Bridge 10 p.m., FX

I’ve fallen deeply in like with this series, which has its penultimate episode of the season on Wednesday. Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger are great as the leads, but one of the most interesting and curious performances comes from Thomas M. Wright (pictured) as the rogue social worker. He’s the strange dude with the stuffed-up mouth who talks like Billy Bob Thornton in “Sling Blade.” Wright, who is from Australia, was also memorable as Johnno in the haunting miniseries “Top of the Lake.”

Survivor: Blood and Water 8 p.m., CBS

What? This old thing is still chugging along? The reality contest – the first to get America’s reality juices flowing in earnest in 1999 – returns for its 27th season tonight. Former players will compete with and against their loved ones this time around. The gimmicks change, but Jeff Probst, he of the canyon-size dimples, remains the same.
