Dances with Wolves½

(Encore on Comcast) A great western, extraordinary in its heartfelt determination to set the record straight about Indians and our dealings with them. In this case a Sioux tribe, befriended by an unusually open US Cavalry officer played by Kevin Costner, who also makes a remarkable directing debut. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 24)

Independence Day

(Encore on Comcast) It plays like an entire movie studio dropped on your head. Aliens in massive flying saucers aim to clobber us, and President Bill Pullman must lead the resistance, which includes scientist Jeff Goldblum and fighter pilot Will Smith. Imagine Cecil B. DeMille directing “War of the Worlds,” and you’ve got the picture. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 28)

The Benchwarmers

(Encore on Comcast) A romp along the cultural fault line between nerds and jocks. Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder, and Jon Lovitz all go through their highly enjoyable motions as a baseball team of freaks and dropouts brings sporting retribution to the world that rejected them. Laughs a-plenty, plus the occasional wince. (PG-13; runs through Dec. 26)
