On Demand movie highlights

The Deer Hunter

(Showtime on Comcast) Michael Cimino’s flawed but riveting movie about male bonding, the Vietnam War, American capitalism, and human relations is an unforgettable epic. Hammered together by the fiery images of Pennsylvania steel mills, horrifying scenes of violence, and the penetrating performance of Robert DeNiro, this controversial, gut-wrenching movie shouldn’t be missed. (R; runs through Oct. 15)

My Left Foot

(Showtime on Comcast) Irish artist-author Christy Brown’s victory over paralysis is brought to the screen with nonstop heart and humor and a total avoidance of clichéd uplift by first-time director Jim Sheridan and the amazing Daniel Day-Lewis. (R; runs through Oct. 15)

The Perfect Game ½

(Showtime on Comcast) Despite clichés and cloying moments, there’s plenty to root for in this true story of a group of kids from a Mexican industrial town who made an impossible run to Little League World Series glory in 1957. Clifton Collins Jr. plays the boys’ coach, a former big-league clubhouse attendant on a journey of his own. (PG; runs through Oct. 15)
