The Simpsons Movie ½

(Comcast Free Movies) For the show’s first movie, Homer brings catastrophe to Springfield. It would be a stretch to call the movie more than a crisper, livelier episode of the series. The change in mediums changes nothing, which suits the filmmakers fine. But while many of the laughs in this movie come easily, some don’t come at all. The show’s weekly rebooting is exciting on TV. It’s less magical in a movie. Do we want a film that seems basically to erase itself? (PG-13; runs through Nov. 30)

Some Girls

(Comcast Movie Collections: All New Movies) A mildly charming farce about a college kid (Patrick Dempsey) who spends Christmas with his beautiful, rich girlfriend in Quebec City, enthralled and confused by the girl herself, her two gorgeous sisters, and her eccentric parents. (Unrated; runs through Dec. 26)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

(Encore on Comcast) A revival of the 1956 cult classic directed by Don Siegel. This film is psychological where the original was political, but little has been lost. Donald Sutherland redeems the project with a droopy countenance and manic intelligence. (PG; runs through Dec. 31)
