Out of Time ★ ★ ½
(Showtime on Comcast) Denzel Washington in another far-fetched thriller, this one about a small-town Florida sheriff who finds himself framed for the murder he’s investigating. The plot relies too heavily on coincidence, and the ending’s a dark and stormy washout — but director Carl Franklin keeps it moving. Washington locates what wit he can, and the result is a movie that makes a fine rental. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 19)
Man on a Ledge ★ ½
(Showtime on Comcast) People cheer the plot twists in this lousy movie about a fugitive (Sam Worthington) threatening to jump off a building. None of the actors has anything to do. You could cast this movie with potato chips and still get cheers when one of the bad guys is cuffed. With potato chips, you understand. With Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, and Ed Harris. (PG-13; runs through Nov. 19)
The Blair Witch Project ★ ★ ★ ½
(Comcast Free Movies) The conceit here is that we are watching found footage left behind by a trio of students who went into the woods to film something horrible and were never seen again. It works with the clammy, unnerving force of a bad dream. Like so many potent horror movies, it’s fed by a cheesy, primal look — and it gets much more mileage from dread than most films in the genre does from gore. (R; runs through Nov. 20)
