Critic’s corner: What’s on TV Monday night

Monty Brinton/CBS

Mike and Molly 9 p.m., CBS

It feels like a completely new show. By fine-tuning “Mike and Molly” to focus on star Melissa McCarthy’s silver screen clout, we’re gaining more of her outlandishness (hurrah!). Last week’s funeral home romp served up the kind of physical comedy that allows McCarthy to excel. But are writers getting lazy on the dialogue as the physicality grows? I’m giving the sitcom a firm slap on the wrist for a series of bad, lazy gay jokes during an episode earlier this month. Lapses in taste aside, we’re optimistic to see how this season’s changes play out. Pictured: McCarthy with Billy Gardell.

Kitchen Crashers 10 p.m. DIY

I am an absolute sucker for any home makeover program. I spend much more time with the “Cousins on Call” (the ruggedly handsome duo formerly known as the “Kitchen Cousins”) than my own cousins. But I’m a bit leery of “Kitchen Crashers.” Lucky folks are plucked out of home improvement stores and given a new kitchen in one weekend. What a bunch of showoffs. It takes me a weekend just to clean my kitchen, four days if I clean the inside of the microwave too.

Rich at Night 8 p.m, TVGN

With “stars” such as John Ratzenberger and Gilbert Gottfried, I suggest changing the name of this holiday special to “It’s a Mediocre Life.”

Fashion Police: 2013 Video Music Awards 9 p.m. E!

Cat’s meow.

Toxic Hot Seat 9 p.m., HBO

Playing with fire.
