The Year Without a Santa Claus 9 p.m., ABC Family
Hold my calls and cancel all appointments . . . is what I would say if I ever received calls or had appointments. Aside from Christmas itself, this is the most important night of the holiday season. ABC Family airs “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” the finest Rankin-Bass “animagic” production ever made. Those of a certain age lap up this 1974 spectacular like it’s peppermint schnapps. It has everything: a cross-dressing Mrs. Claus, a pair of climate-controlling mama’s boys showboating through song and dance, and a rogue reindeer getting zapped by heat rays. Mickey Rooney voices this very cranky and slightly lazy version of Kris Kringle.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D 8 p.m., ABC
If you’ve been reluctant to watch “Agents” because you’re not a heroes and villains movie kind of person, it’s time to let down your guard and relent. This is Joss Whedon’s attempt to reach out to the comic book-curious without letting down his hard-core fanbase. It’s “The Avengers,” without hulking green mutants and men of iron. Tonight is the mid-season finale, which means if you haven’t been watching, you have time to catch up before the show returns in February.
